about DAH

ABOUT DAH Theater

Out of a need for profound experimental work, directors Jadranka Andelic and Dijana Miloševic formed DAH Theatre in 1991. From the beginning, actress Maja Mitic was with them and two years later, they were joined by actress Sanja Krsmanovic Tasic. In 1993 DAH Theatre enlarged its activities by founding DAH Theatre Research Centre. Through their work, the members of DAH Theatre have strongly opposed war and violence.

"In the contemporary world, destruction and violence can only be opposed by the creation of sense" ~ this is the founding and continuing motto of DAH Theatre.

DAH Theatre engages in various networks and collaborations with artists from all over the world. DAH Theatre artists tour throughout Europe, USA, New Zealand and Australia.

Texts: Ruth Magraff, A.P. Chekhov’s Three Sisters, Kakuzo Okakura The Book of Tea, three haiku poems by Basho, Dave Duggan’s AH 6905, documentary materials collected by Human Rights Fund and Women in Black, fragments from daily news, information from the internet, and DAH Theater

This performance of DAH Theatre takes as its point of departure the classic play by A.P. Chekhov Three Sisters. This is a reference point, a frame that holds different stories and topics together. The central theme of the play – represented by a train that will eventually take the sisters to their dream place, Moscow, and the Chekhovian narrative of missed opportunities and lost chances – has inspired and provoked several important issues with which DAH Theatre’s version of Three Sisters is dealing. Trains and missed opportunities lead to missing people, missing languages and missing truths. This performance explores the meaning of memory in relation to truth, especially harsh truth. The questions raised in the show are not about hidden truths, but rather about how we treat harsh truth. What happens when, for example, the truth about the abduction of people on a train, during the wars in The Balkans, is recognized? What are the implications of information that we get through media, information that is not properly or humanely treated? What is the role of memory? What are the forms of amnesia in our time and how do we create rituals anamnesis? By extension, of course, we are asked to consider how our own country’s truths are being concealed, and by whom?

“…Old beautifully designed tea sets, white fragile costumes of the actresses (Milena Ristic), mobile and extremely functional stage set (Neša Paripovic), especially composed music by the authors Aleksandra Damnjanovic, Jugoslav Hadžic and Nebojša Ignjatovic - all in this performance is impressive. The person who is to take most of the credit for this is the director and dramaturg Dijana Miloševic, that with her talent, experience and authority knew how to get from the remarkable actors Jugoslav Hadžic, Aleksandra Jelic, Sanja Krsmanovic Tasic and Maja Mitic as so many times before, the absolute maximum”(…)Milica Zajcev, “DANAS”,21 November 2006

This performance is based on texts from Women's Side of War, a book edited by the Women in Black organization. The book is a collection of women's testimonies about wars, taking place on the soil of the former republic of Yugoslavia from 1991 till 1999. The Women in Black, in cooperation with women's nongovernmental organizations who are dealing with this region, the past, and human rights, formed this book after one year of research and interviews. The stories describe the specific suffering of women in war, but also they capture the courage and strength of overcoming the traumas of war while establishing a normal life. All testimonies are in first person, without comment, changes, or misuse.

“Composed of personal confessions of mothers whose children were killed in front of their own eyes, raped women and witnesses of other war horrors, the performance Crossing the Line asks: How is it possible to establish trust between people of once warring powers? How is it possible to establish a dialog between sides with their traumatic experience - between the victim and the innocent that belong to a collective who produced a victim from the other collective? How to cross the line of undeniable crime, how to cross the line of pain that cannot heal, the line of burning embitters and immobilizing shame? How can the victims be touched by the shame and suffering of those who were on the other side? How to, without fear, reveal our own emotional sympathy to the victims from the other side? In order to establish the trust between nations and states - to actually, take and remove the burden of shame from the conscience of innocent people, despite whose will and in which name the crimes were sowed - it is necessary that this country finish with political crime. Until all of that is really done, voices of conscience that are “crossing the line” can only be heard from the realm of alternative culture “(…) Zlatko Pakovic, “POLITIKA” 9 May 2009
