ATLANTA – From September 4-14, 2025 at 7 Stages, the play F.PUNK JUNKIES will be performed on 7 Stages’ Mainstage in an exciting and unconventional theatre-in-the-round format.

F.PUNK JUNKIES is a Woman-centered, Black and Brown Ensemble-driven dance theatre piece written and directed by Teo Castellanos, a multidisciplinary artist from Miami. This work brings the company’s “AfroRican Punk” aesthetic to their storytelling, and digs deeply into our collective ancestral roots.

Synopsis: Six deities gather to share tales woven with energetic punk music and expressive movement: Stories of a guitar player at a crossroad, a greedy deceiver, a theatrical baseball ritual, a secret society of beautiful femmes, an encounter on a plastic beach, a prison break, and reunification in the mosh pit. They are adapted from Orisha Mythology and Caribbean folktales with modern flair.

Originally co-produced by Miami Light Projects in 2022, this new production will feature artists from Atlanta and Miami – Alisha Simmons, Elaina Walton, Naïma Fowler, Inez Barlatier, Dr. Yvonne Miranda Singh and Teo Castellanos.

Tickets to F.PUNK JUNKIES are available at 7Stages.org and follow an accessible tiered pricing model.

Teo Castellanos is an acclaimed independent actor, writer, and director with over 30 years of experience in devised theater, film, and television. He is a Doris Duke Artist (2021), a United States Artist Fellow (2019), and a Sundance Institute Screenwriters Intensive Fellow (2015). Teo’s award-winning solo performance NE 2nd Avenue, commissioned by Miami Light Project, toured extensively for a decade and earned the Fringe First Award at the 2003 Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.

About 7 Stages:

7 Stages brings local, national, and international emerging artwork of social, political, and spiritual importance to Atlanta audiences. Since 1979, artists of all kinds have found 7 Stages to be a haven for the development of new work.

7 Stages has resided on the ancestral and unceded lands of the Muscogee (Creek) people for over 43 years. While we produce content that spans nationally and internationally, it is essential for us to keep such inequities at the forefront of all that we do. We aim to honor these communities past, present and future through conversations, practices and programming that imagines and initiates what reparations look like for all. For every ticket sold, we include an Indigenous land use fee. The proceeds are donated to our Indigenous partners annually.

Our Mission: 7 Stages is a professional, non-profit theatre company devoted to engaging artists and audiences by focusing on the social, political, and spiritual values of contemporary culture. 7 Stages gives primary emphasis to international work and the support and development of new plays, new playwrights, and new methods of collaboration

Our Vision: Our theatre will be a global center for the creation of vital conversations through collaborative performance.

It’s broken, let’s fix it.

Arts funding in Atlanta has been broken for decades, and a group of diverse arts leaders, Arts Capital | Atlanta, have come together to try to fix it and undo some of the damage and inequities that have persisted.

The arts in Atlanta are thriving! There is so much going on all the time it is impossible to experience even half of it. We are lucky to live in the Cultural Capital of the South. However, the cost of this incredibly rich tapestry has been shouldered by artists and arts administrators at small and midsize arts organizations for far too long. The artists have told us loud and clear they are not willing to do it anymore, and they must be paid a living wage.

If Atlanta wants to continue to be a thriving beacon of culture for the south, it is going to have to figure out how to pay for it. To that end, over 20 arts organizations of all sizes and disciplines have been meeting weekly for 2 years to solve some of the systemic issues. We have been meeting with funders in our community with a strong history of arts support and have asked them to give even more, and to encourage their peers to also step up to assist. We are well on our way to success, and now we are asking our community to help lift our message.

If you love and support the diverse arts ecosystem in Atlanta, let’s be loud about it together! Atlanta has some amazing funders in the family foundation space, and we are grateful to each and every one. They have been giving consistently, but it is simply not enough to support all the incredible work in our community. There is an immense gap between the available funding and the work being done every day on stages, in galleries, studios, parks and just about every public space you can think of.

There is also immense wealth in our community, and we need to lift our voices and talk about the arts with friends, neighbors, the business community and the press—anyone who will listen. We have to lift this narrative that the arts in Atlanta are at a crossroads. If enough of us speak up about it, often enough and loud enough, chances are the right people with the right access and control will hear it and support this effort. We’re calling on you, Atlanta, to speak up for the arts.

We know there are incredible challenges in our world these days and perhaps it seems there are other more urgent matters. As we like to say in the improv world, “Yes and…” We need the arts more than ever to make it through the atrocities we’re witnessing every day. Now is the time. Arts and Culture is under attack, along with our other constitutional rights. Lift your voice. Without the arts, it would just be the atrocities. We need the arts to survive.

Over 200 arts orgs have been identified in Metro Atlanta, and after surveying them it became clear we need $100M to just get on stable ground.

Once our goal is met, we will not stop there. That won’t fix the systemic issue. We will continue to be loud and fundraise every year and create a new arts funding stream for long-term health, tapping the growing wealth in our community.

Georgia consistently ranks among the lowest funding per capita in the country. Currently about $0.14 per person. There are 8 states above $5 and 3 above $10! Even Alabama has over $1.50. It’s embarrassing! This year Fulton County, one of our largest funders, reduced the budget appropriations for Arts and Culture by almost 50%.

The American Rescue Plan propped up the arts community through covid and we almost had adequate funding for once. Georgia Council for the Arts had an additional $3,000,000 to award for a few years, and it still paled in comparison to other states. The Federal funding around the Employment Retention Tax Credit and the Shuttered Venue Operating Grant provided stability for arts organizations across the country for a short time. All of that funding has ended, while costs have grown exponentially.

The latest blow came May 2nd when the National Endowment for the Arts cancelled and rescinded hundreds, if not thousands (we’re still counting), of grants previously awarded across the country. AC|A is calculating the local impact but the national total is over $20M so far.

Youth Creates is 7 Stages’ training program providing experiential learning and performance opportunities for teenagers. Through playwriting, design, and performance, students collaborate to create an original production.

To celebrate 20 years of the program, we started collecting stories from the alumni who made Youth Creates what it is today!

Hey there, I’m Geoffrey! Since moving on from YC in 2014, I went to Emory University, where I got a degree in Theater Studies and Painting.

I’m now a painter, tattoo artist, and performer. I’ve got murals up in Decatur, Little 5, Cabbage Town and Bankhead. I’m traveling all over to tattoo. I’m also playing guitar in the local music scene, and am working on my first album.

YC was an incredible time for me to work deeply with other creatives. That time helped me further my own style, but most importantly introduced me to a community of artists I’m still very much a part of. Those years in YC taught me practical skills, provided fresh opportunities, and let me work with some truly delightful humans. I wish you well on your journey.

The time I spent with the Youth Creates program has definitely shaped the adult artist that I’ve become. Spending time overseas in the Netherlands definitely opened my eyes to the world around me. It helped me grow up and appreciate different cultures. My eight or so years in the program were artistically fulfilling. They informed my artistic voice and taught me compassion and compromise with love.

Since graduating the program I have starred in many short films and even a couple features. I started my own film company Trash Mouth Productions in late 2021. I am also a Local IATSE 479 film union member. I wouldn’t be happy doing anything else besides art.

From my start at 7 Stages with sitting on the couch after school in the office to the one and only Heidi Howard forcing me to the stage, YC has shaped every fiber of my being and has constructed a future in theatre that would not have been possible without it. I have had the opportunity to teach children acting, work administratively in the theatre, and have continued to act onstage with my most recent accomplishment being Joanne in Rent.

Hey Devi! My name is Tia! A YC memory from 2015: Looking up at the stars, we all brought out our instruments and sang what we felt. We made songs from random prompts (like spider monkey? 🤷🏽‍♀️😂) and made interpretive dances. It was truly a creative space. No expectations, just art.

That moment taught me the importance of presence. I still use that today; if I feel uninspired, I take a break from technology and just enjoy the space around me. What have you learned from YC that still inspires you today?

Youth Creates has definitely been a life changing experience for me. Summer of 2014 was when I initially joined YC as a foreign exchange student from Israel. I loved the program so much that I came back the following summer. I can honestly say that YC felt like a “butterfly effect” for me by how randomly the bridge of events occurred to bring me here all the way from Israel which completely changed the path I decided to take in my life after that. I met so many incredible people that I am grateful to still be friends with to this day. YC also gave me the courage and will to move to Atlanta in 2018 despite fear and doubt of the unknown.

I am currently a senior at SCAD with an illustration major and acting minor. about to graduate. I am also tattooing, illustrating and doing freelance graphic design at the moment.

Hello everyone! I am currently a Senior majoring in Film & Media, graduating early from Georgia State whoop whoop! The first glimpse I got of Youth Creates was the 2016 show “Dig” and at that moment I knew I wanted to join. Best decision I’ve ever made. I was quiet and very reserved at first, but YC taught me how to use my voice and to OWN it lol. It really is a safe space for your creativity without judgment.

Now I’m speaking up and exploring the art side of me as a young adult. There was also the opportunity to meet and create with people my age internationally! What an experience! but yes the friends, smiles and memories I have from YC and Bootcamp will always have a place in my heart.

I realize now that Youth Creates has shaped me in more ways than one. Initially, performing and sharing my experience gave me butterflies, and I wanted to learn to control that. I know now that everyone all over the world gets butterflies. Youth Creates teaches you to mold those butterflies into something to tell the world. Most of all, Youth Creates is here to remind you that the world embraces you for you. So let it shine!

I’ll never forget Parker Ciliax teaching me a portion of “Venetian Boat Song” while on a rehearsal break. It is one of my favorite classical pieces to this day, and a testament to the creative energy that was constantly buzzing around us. As I pursue my endeavors, artistic or otherwise, I search for that warmth and encouragement in a group or community. Youth Creates taught me to find ‘Magic Moments’ in everything I do and to fight for what I care about.

Youth Creates has been one of the most incredible and life-changing experiences of my life, teaching me not only about the beautiful arts and inspiring me to pursue music, but also about myself, inspiring me to use my voice and to grow as a person to become who I am today.

I am a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and aspiring music producer.
There are so many beautiful things that I could say about my time with Youth Creates, and all of them would be true. I saw my first show at the age of 6 (Freddie Hendricks & Youth Ensemble of Atlanta’s “School House Rocks”) at 7 Stages and knew that I was destined to be on one of their stages. I didn’t know that I had manifested exactly that. Many years later my mom heard about Youth Creates from my cousin who starred in the YEA show. From the Age of 12 to now, YC has impacted my life in so many ways. I moved into TV & Film production with the skills that Heidi, Mack, Del & the rest of the gang taught. I met so many incredible talents along the way as well.

I will forever brag about my time with YC & the fact that It gave myself and many other creative children the outlet to just BE. Now I’m 34 and a parent to a 6yr old with an imagination and a passion for creating just as I had; and I know that YC will be a part of her life when the time presents itself as well. That’s just how the 7 Stages family works. Thank you Youth Creates & 7 Stages for giving a kid like me a chance.

xoxo, Britany L. White (YC, 2003-beyond)

7 Stages presents ArtSpot Productions’ “Sea of Common Catastrophe” (Feb. 2-12), which features some heavy themes of Hurricane Katrina and gentrification in New Orleans. These ideas aren’t restricted to NOLA though; over the last few years Atlanta has had its own problems with gentrification. We caught up with Historic Properties Coordinator Ben Sutton from The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation to shed more light on what gentrification is and how ATL arts and younger generations can be aware of it.

Q. What is gentrification and what causes it?

A. I think gentrification is a bit of a loaded term because, depending on who you are and your perspective, it can mean a couple of different things. Generally speaking … gentrification is when a traditional or historic neighborhood rapidly changes in terms of property values, because folks who have not traditionally lived in that area, are drawn to the amenities or affordable property that are available there. Long term, if those home values stay at a high level, then their tax rates also increase which means that even if somebody has lived in a historic neighborhood for a long time and has no intent to sell, that home becomes unaffordable for them. There is a balance to be struck between a neighborhood that needs investment and revitalization versus a neighborhood that is overrun because it’s a trendy spot.

Q. How has gentrification in Atlanta changed in the 21st Century and what are certain areas that are receiving the brunt of it?

A. Atlanta isn’t experiencing anything that other major cities are not experiencing. In the 1940s through the ‘80s and ‘90s, there was a trend to move out of the city and into the suburbs and satellite cities. People now want to move back into the city … that naturally creates at least the appearance of gentrification …. Major projects that I would argue are connected to that trend, like the Beltline, Ponce City Market, all of these big investments in the city center, are actually a response to the trend that was already taking place – of people moving back into the city. All along the eastside trail of the Beltline, prices have been skyrocketing over the last five years like Inman Park, Virginia Highlands and Historic Midtown. But that would’ve happened without the Beltline. What the Beltline can make sure of is that those westside areas like West End and Adair Park have the opportunity to stay as they have been. …[You’ve] got the new Falcon’s stadium in that area and their big redevelopment plans over in Vine City. So everybody talks a good game but it will be interesting to see if the controls that are in place are actually used to maintain traditional neighborhoods and traditional communities.

Q. How does Atlanta’s gentrification compare to other major U.S. cities like New Orleans?

A. Atlanta is a different animal than New Orleans, which is a very unique case because you basically had everyone leave the city and it became a blank slate. Atlanta is different because there’s nowhere that was entirely wiped out like that. But if you go back to the early 20th century, the density of in-town Atlanta was incredible — just the number of people per square mile. That density disappeared in the last half of the 20th century though and now we’re building back to it. There’s a really great example of what can be done about gentrification in New Orleans. There’s a project called the Iberville Offsites around the historic Tremé neighborhood. They bought 40 or 50 old shotgun houses and saved these dilapidated properties by funding them as low income housing and treating them like an apartment building with 50 units. That project is a really good one to look at because … the low income housing aspect of it not only preserved the architecture, but also the traditional community of the neighborhood. There are many opportunities for that type of model to be used in Atlanta.

Q. What are some things young people (20’s and 30’s) can do to work against gentrification in Atlanta?

A. My advice is just knowing where you live, knowing its history, knowing the people you live with or around and recognizing what part of the community you are. So if you were to move into a historic neighborhood, you might have a neighbor over to your right that’s also a renter and a house across the street with a lady who has lived there for fifty years. Understanding her and her story is a critical aspect of what the community you live in now is all about. From that woman across the street’s perspective, you might be the gentrifier. But from your perspective, the gentrifier is the developer two streets down that’s knocking all these houses down and selling them for three times as much as they bought them for, because if he does that enough times, you can’t rent in that neighborhood anymore. By understanding that neighborhood history, you learn what to fight for and why it’s important to fight for it.

Q. How do the arts affect gentrification?

A. The old adage is “if you want to watch gentrification happen, watch where the artists go,” and that’s because artists are looking for cheap rent and tend to be brave individuals. Once they prove that a place is livable, everybody else tends to follow and eventually you end up with suburban families with kids who move in because they think it’s such a trendy place to live. If you take that as true, then your first step as artists moving into a neighborhood is to build those community bonds I was talking about. Invest however you can in the community you’re in by understanding the history and the people you live around, and by doing that you become a much greater advocate for your neighborhood.

Our summer marketing interns, Sarah Summerbell and Ryan Williams, had the opportunity to interview the creators of Cowboy, Niv Sheinfeld and Oren Laor. Below, they talk about the story behind the western theme, abstract versus concrete story lines, and bringing the production to America:

Q. The word “cowboy” invokes a stereotypical American image of masculinity. How does your show comment on or play with American themes?

A. Cowboy is not only an American icon – when we were growing up (late 70s and early 80s), most Israeli boys choose to wear a cowboy costume in Purim (A Jewish holiday in which kids put on costumes, like Halloween). So it is very much part of our childhood as well, we were also dressed up in cowboy costume back then, and more than once. As we grew up, the image of the cowboy became more complex and came to stand for not only masculinity, but also for the romantic notion of living alone and of being an outsider. In the show we play with all kinds of masculine and feminine images. In the vogue scene they call it Gender Fuck. We play with what we are expected to be, and with what we are expected not to be, we play with the questions of how we men ask for closeness and touch, how we communicate and how we eliminate communication when we need to be alone. We play with the contrasting fragments of our identity as men and as gay men (or are they really contrasting…).
Q. This is your first time performing Cowboy in America. How do you expect American audiences to react?

A. We think that the show carries universal themes, and yet some of its content is directly connected to American culture. There’s a lot in common between American and Israeli cultures, so we hope the public will feel at home right from the start.
Q. How did you come up with this piece? What were your influences?

A. The romantic image of the cowboy (lone ranger, isolated in the mountains for long periods), the movie Brokeback Mountain, the American vogue scene, the movie Paris is Burning.
Q. Could you categorize this piece into a theatrical style. If so, what would that be?

A. It’s very limiting to try and categorize the work into a theatrical style. It is a mix of dance, theater, performance. We like to call it “stage event”.
Q. How do you experiment with abstraction vs. concrete storytelling? How much is abstract? How much is concrete?

A. It’s concrete enough to have the public understand what is happening, however it is still abstract in a way because there’s no narrative to follow or dramatic story telling.

What part of working on this prequel to Goddesspell the Musical has been most beneficial and why was it important to step away and work on A Touch of Goddesspell before finishing Goddesspell the Musical?

A. The idea of Goddesspell as a musical theatre piece came out of the desire to really look at the ways we devalue the feminine spirit or yin energy and the effects that this has not only on us personally but on humanity in general. The glorification of masculine energy at the expense of the feminine principle is reflected in our world in many ways that we have come to just accept as normal including seeing God as a man. Goddesspell, up until last year was a concept in my mind and on paper. When we (The Pacha Mamas) really started developing it as an actual living breathing show, we realized that in order to address all the goddess archetypes that we would be presenting with integrity, the process was going to take much more time and resources than we originally thought. At the same time, we all were feeling concern for the environment, our Mother Earth, and the critical place we are with those issues. It occurred to us that our misuse and abuse of our natural resources is a direct reflection of our devaluing of yin/feminine energy – that it is all connected. So putting these concerns together- the length of time and the amount of support/resources we would need to build to really do Goddesspell justice AND our sense of urgency for transformation around the ways in which we relate to Mother Earth, we came up with what we are calling “Guardians of Gaia” AKA “A Touch of Goddesspell” which has elements of what Goddesspell will be but can stand on it’s own as an hour long show that we can more easily take on mini-tours (along with an offering of a companion workshop as an opportunity to delve into the subject deeper as a community) to mostly our familiar stomping grounds to begin with as soon as this fall.

Q. A Touch of Goddesspell is all about Mother Earth and our connection with her, good and bad. Tell audiences a little more about why you wanted to focus on this topic now?

A. We are living unsustainably on the earth right now. We are trashing the earth to be quite frank and some people don’t really want to look at that especially if they don’t feel it’s affecting them directly and other people are just too busy trying to keep their own lives above water to try and deal with one more problem so to speak. This is obviously a completely disempowering way of looking or not looking at the issues. The fact is that what is happening is affecting us all NOW whether we choose to look at it or not. And here is where I will give you one quote from the end of our little show to make this point: “The earth is not a problem to be solved; it is a living being to which we belong. The earth is part of our own self and we are part of its suffering wholeness. Until we go to the root of our image of separateness, there can be no healing. And the deepest part of our separateness from creation lies in our forgetfulness of its sacred nature, which is also our own sacred nature.” The fact is, so many of us have become completely disconnected from our inherent and interconnected sacred nature and it’s being reflected in a very unbalanced and violent world.

Q. Your work as a group is a mixture of music, spoken word, movement and exudes energy. Why did you choose to create performances that encompassed so many art forms, and what do you want audiences to take away from this mixture of creation?

A. Well, I think the first thing that comes to mind is the fact that The Pacha Mamas came together previously having many different kinds of experiences in the performing arts and each one of us came in with a different specialization. For example, most of Marquetta’s formal artistic training has been in dance, Vivian’s in music and mine in theatre. So we are all bringing these different gifts to the table and finding that it’s fun and interesting and more fulfilling for us to mix it up or combine things- not only for us but for our audiences. All these forms compliment and add depth to each other and it’s sort of a reflection of life really and the beauty and depth that is found in the diversity of people’s gifts especially when expressed in collaboration. In general, we want audiences to feel energized, inspired, engaged and uplifted by what we do and how we do it.

Q. Home Brew is all about aiding local artists in developing their work, as well as exposing Atlanta audiences to local artists. What has been the best part of developing this piece as part of the Home Brew Series, and how does it aid in the next steps?

A. This opportunity has actually been much more significant for us than I think we originally anticipated. I am so grateful for it and we haven’t even had our presentation yet because honestly it really is about the process at this point. As individual artists, The Pacha Mamas are all piecing together our living in very creative ways through many different means. By most people’s standards, we live on the edge financially which is a price many artists pay but wouldn’t have it any other way out of integrity to our creative spirit/freedom. SO to coordinate the schedules of all three of us in order to find chunks of time to develop/create together is very difficult. BUT when you have a deadline, you go way out of your way to make it happen which is what we have been doing. So at this moment the fact that we have a definite place and time to share our work has been a huge catalyst in the actual creation of this piece so far. We are so thankful for the sense of purpose Home Brew has given us. The idea that there are people out there that believe in what we are doing enough to help support us in making it happen is HUGE. It’s not that easy to get support in developing new work and it usually requires a lot of voluntary time from the artists. I feel like the root of this comes from a real disconnect in our culture when it comes to the things we value in general and in particular valuing product over process. I’m looking forward to the kind of world where art and especially the kind that really engages the audience in inquiry is truly valued for the power that it has to help make the world a more spiritually and emotionally healthy place, translating into more true joy, love and peace all around!!! I believe as we begin to hold those aspects of ourselves that are considered yin/feminine energy in much higher esteem, creating more balance within ourselves, we will begin to see this change in the world. Ultimately, I’m hoping that Guardians of Gaia is one of the things that helps facilitate that change and with the help of the Home Brew program that feels much more feasible to us.

Find out below why Tera wanted to be a part of Inside I, who her character is, and why she thinks this play might change your life for the better:

Q. Inside I uses multimedia techniques to help the audience understand autism. What was your perception of autism before working on this production? And how has this production changed that perception?

A. I had a very limited understanding of autism before working on this show and am grateful for what I’ve learned. The evolution of doctors’ understanding and care for people with autism is fascinating and very easy for me to relate to. In the past, doctors and parents seemed to try to force a person with autism to communicate as neurotypical people do. As someone who dances to her own beat, I very much like the current thinking of accepting people as they are and trying to meet them somewhere in the middle. I learned that meeting one person with autism means that you have only experienced their autism – another person’s will be totally different. Watching interviews with Temple Grandin was fascinating. As a person with autism she explores her thinking and inner life like an artist. We would all be better off if we understood ourselves as well as she understands herself.

Q. Describe your character and their role in the play?

A. My character is Sophia and she grows up with Ben from age 6 to 17 in the play. She is a girl without much guidance that seeks to take care of her wants and needs while being rather unaware of how her actions may affect people. Her interactions with the lead character, Ben, are a sampling of what people with autism, and regular people, may experience from their peers while growing up.

Q. Inside I is told through video, puppetry, and other visual techniques, what is the biggest challenge as an actor in telling a story this way on stage?

A. Michael and Erwin have really set up a story which is shown and not told (my favorite kind of art.) While there is a good deal of technology and blocking in the piece we have to make our performances intimate and relatable to pull audience members in and hopefully stir up empathy. While this is a story primarily about an autistic person I think many people will easily relate to the characters. The themes are similar for many families.

Q. What do you hope audiences will walk away talking about after seeing Inside I?

A. I hope audiences will get a taste of an experience outside of their own. I hope they will relate to the characters and that the play will expand their thinking about people that have different perspectives than their own. I hope it will change everyone’s lives for the better!!!
