Celebrating Jane Sapp: Singing Up Courage and Community
October 25, 2026 at 7 Stages – 5-7pm
Join us for a joyful celebration of courage, resistance and hope, accompanied by a mandate for racial justice and resistance. We will show love and deep respect for our precious community elder and national treasure, Jane Wilburn Sapp. Come to sing up courage and community just as our ancestors did decades ago. Jane Sapp’s life and legacy are precisely who and what the Trump Administration targets for erasure. Over the past five decades, Jane has been a central leader in a practice of cultural work and grassroots organizing that emphasizes the critical role of arts and culture in struggles for social justice. In Southern communities, including Birmingham, Selma, and Greene County (Alabama), Little Rock, New Orleans, and Biloxi, as well as throughout the Northeast, Jane Sapp launched and guided cultural programs. She taught and inspired many people at community organizing hubs such as the Highlander Research and Education Center, Penn Community Center on St. Helena’s Island (South Carolina https://www.penncenter.com/), and the Southern Partners Fund.
